WASHINGTON – The American ambassador to the United Kingdom, Louis Susman, left London this week, leaving the top U.S. diplomatic post officially open.

His expected successor is Louisville entrepreneur Matthew Barzun, according to numerous reports in the British and American press.

With Susman gone, it would seem that a White House announcement on his replacement would be close at hand. Obviously, the Obama administration would not want to leave such a high-profile position vacant for very long.

Barzun, 43, was a major fundraiser for President Barack Obama and served as his national finance chairman in the 2012 campaign.

The Louisvillian also served as Obama’s ambassador in Sweden from 2009 until 2011.

Barzun’s nomination would be subject to Senate confirmation.

Both the White House and Barzun, as is the usual policy in these matters, have declined to comment.
